Is a concept artist who does also does creature design as well as costume design. His work has influenced the style of sketches, making them a little messier but also bold and detailed enough to convey my ideas. Although, Merantz' work is more humanoid than mine, I thought he would be a good starting point for my artist research.
He has also worked in Z-Brush which has inspired me to try and figure out how to use it over the summer as it can help created some really finished looking concept art.
I decided not to use it for this project as it would have taken me too much time to figure out and would have had to have done it over the first couple of weeks.
Merantz' work is quite detailed and what I was aiming for for my project, but looking back on this research, I realized I have oversimplified my project. This could be because I have no experience with creature design, but I hope and want to build on it in my spare time. As Jerad Merantz said, “Creature design is such an abstract job that roughing out shapes in 3D is much more efficient for conveying an idea to a client.”

Jordu Schell's work, on the other hand, relates more to what I want to acheive as my piece is more fantasy creature. Like most concept artist and creature deisgners Jordu Schell uses animals as references and goes from there.
I have done a little of this as well as it will give the audience something they can relate to, subconsciouly. I'm probably going to end up using big cats and maybe look at the bone structure of a horse as they have longer necks.
Schell's work is a lot more detailed than mine. His work inspires me to push myself, more so for my next projects. I aspire to get to his standard of work as it is just so detailed and coherent. I thouroughly enjoy his style and his work because of the detail he incorporates into it, whether it's a concept piece or an actual sculpt.
With more practice, which I didn't have much of a chance this year, I hope to one day achieve this attention to detail. The reason I wasn't able to this time was because it was only the second time using sculpey and I had only done one headsculpt previously. So I didn't have much experience, which I will change over the summer, because I want to be proud of my work. Even if it's just for myself.
